ALLA 2018 Conference
Introduction
The organising committee is delighted to announce that the 2018 conference will be held at the Doubletree by Hilton Esplanade (116 Esplanade, Darwin City) from Wednesday, 2nd May through to Friday, 4th of May 2018 in Darwin, Northern Territory.
A biennial event hosted by the Australian Law Librarians’ Association (ALLA), the Conference is the major professional and business development event in the Association’s 2018 calendar.
2018 Conference Speakers
The Conference Committee is delighted to bring to ALLA 2018 three keynote speakers who represent the conference theme of Local Footprint, Global Impact.

Ruth Bird
Ruth is currently working as the ‘elibrary Myanmar Project Capacity Building Manager’ with EIFL www.eifl.org. She was the Bodleian Law Librarian at Oxford’s Bodleian Law Library for 13 years, until March 2017. Her career started in teaching, but she was soon attracted to librarianship, which just looked like more fun. The past 30-plus years have proven this was the right choice – from school libraries to law firms and then academia, both in Australia and more recently in the UK, her enthusiasm for the work of librarians has never diminished.Over the years she has been involved in many aspects of the profession, from designing early computer catalogues to helping design three new libraries, to the refurbishment of the BLL, teaching legal research, writing articles, blogs, helping design an app, and working in knowledge management. For two years, Ruth was a law firm marketing manager, but soon came back to the fold. She is a strong advocate for professional associations, having been active in ALLA, and is a Life Member of both BIALL and IALL. In 2010 she was made an Honorary Bencher at Middle Temple. She seeks to encourage positive, user focussed approaches to services and practices in each workplace, and looks forward to sharing some of her experiences with you at ALLA 2018.

Danial Kelly
​
Danial is a Senior Lecturer in the Charles Darwin Univerisity (CDU) School of Law. His PhD was on the intersections of authority of Australian law and Christianity with Aboriginal customary law in Arnhem Land. Prior to joining the faculty in 2010, Danial worked as a lawyer with the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency. He has also worked as a mediator and teacher in Australia and Indonesia. Danial continues to work on legal and justice issues concerning the Aboriginal communities in the Top End of the Northern Territory, especially the interaction between Aboriginal customary law and Australian law.

Sue Tongue
​
Sue Tongue is a Special Counsel in Minter Ellison’s Canberra office. She is a public lawyer specializing in administrative law. Sue led the Australian Law Reform Commission and later the Migration Review Tribunal. She was a UN lawyer, High Court Associate, an adviser to the federal Attorney-General and legal advisor to the Senate Scrutiny of Bills Committee. Academic appointments in the US and Australia have also helped with her research and teaching skills.
