Description:

At the Supreme Court of Victoria, consultation with the legal sector helped develop a five-year strategic plan that reflected the desire for a modern and dynamic Law Library of Victoria. The plan aims to establish a digital library service to support current and future generations of the legal profession to deliver better justice outcomes for all Victorians.

Victorian Supreme Court Librarian Laurie Atkinson will present the strategic plan and describe the consultation process, how the plan evolved, became operational, and how progress is measured.

From the Supreme Court Library Queensland, David Bratchford will focus on the process of developing SCLQ’s current strategic plan, including their remote collaboration with Dr Finch and intensive consultation with key legal sector stakeholders.

The five year strategic plan has helped the library to successfully navigate the treacherous waters of the coronavirus pandemic and provided a map for the future of SCLQ library services. David will briefly describe the finished product and discuss its role in helping the library position itself as the state’s leading legal library – ‘your law library’ for the majority of Queenslanders.

Presenters

Laurie Atkinson derives great enjoyment from leading the team of the Law Library of Victoria. Part of her role is to execute a long-range strategy to improve library services to Victorian judges and lawyers, with the flow-on impact of improving access to justice for all Victorians. Laurie is also the Chair of the National Library’s Trove Strategic Advisory Committee, and holds leadership roles in a number of other boards and committees.

David Bratchford has been Queensland’s Supreme Court Librarian since September 2013. During his time at SCLQ, his focus has been on modernising the library, including its staffing structure and working conditions, work practices and processes, technology, collections and services. Soon after his arrival he prepared the library’s first comprehensive strategic plan. Later, from early 2018 over a 12 months period, the library partnered with UK-based consultant Dr Matt Finch to undertake an ambitious visioning and planning exercise which culminated in the completion and adoption of ‘Your law library, fit for the future’ in early 2019.
